This Valentine's Day, students explored properties of candy hearts by predicting and testing if they sank or floated in several different liquids. Ask your child if their prediction was correct or not. They also did a partner challenge. They experimented using different ways to stack candy hearts to make the tallest tower. Challenge them to create their own tower out of something at home! See if they can beat their candy heart record!
It was so sweet to see the students share their love with each other throughout the day as well. Can you believe it has been 100 days of school already?! The kiddos had a blast counting to 100 in so many different ways today! They stacked a tower using 100 cups. They made necklaces out of 100 fruit loops. They decorated crowns and posters. The kiddos also had a little glimpse into their future. I used a face filter to make them look as if they were 100 years old! Take a look at the picture to see if you can tell which “grandpa” or “grandma” is yours! They got a kick out of seeing their faces! The students also wrote about what they would do if they were 100 years old! Some of the answers were quite funny… eating 100 pieces of candy, have $100, hug and kiss all of my 100 grandchildren… These were just a few. Ask your child what they wrote about! In the book we read, “Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th day of Kindergarten,” the students in the class brought in different collections of 100 things. Some collected loose change, buttons, and even toys. Encourage your little one to make a collection of their own. They are welcome to bring it in and share with the class. You can also email me a picture to project on the smart board so that your child can share! This week and last, we dove deep as we investigated Polar Bears. What fascinating creatures they are. Towards the end of our investigation, the kiddos became authors and illustrators of their own informational texts They were so excited to show what they learned in the form of a book. They couldn't wait to put it all together and add their detailed illustrations. Every day, I am amazed with how far they have come this year. I am sure you are too! Ask your child to read their book to you and tell you some of the cool facts we learned about polar bears! Some of the students were making learning connections at home as well. Thea shared a page of her calendar that showed a mama polar bear and her cubs. Sanvi created a research project and labeled a diagram of a polar bear! Way to go girls! I love to see their enthusiasm for learning by taking action at home! Encourage your child to take action by teaching a family member what they learned about polar bears! We learned a lot about the Chinese New Year thanks to Gary! We watched some Chinese dancing and listened to some traditional Chinese Music. I think the dragon dance was the crowed favorite. Ask your child what they wondered about in their Curiosity Journal.
These curious kinders had fun learning about our Groundhog Day Tradition, writing about their predictions, and graphing them as a class. They also practiced their listening skills through a directed drawing video. We can’t wait to find out what happens! Tune in tomorrow morning (February 2nd) at 7:25 to see the famous Punxutawney Phil make his decision.
This week, we did a book study on "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats. They used a mixture of shaving cream and glue to make a snowy scene from the book! We had so much fun!
